In a recent conversation with some friends, I listened to a lady share how time seems to be moving too quickly. We understood her to mean years, but she extended her comment to include her waking hours, and we all nodded in understanding. Another lady pointed out that all too often her day seems to go by so quickly that before she knows it, it’s over and she’s accomplished very little. Still another remarked that as long as she keeps busy, she doesn’t mind when the day comes to an end; but if the hours tick by with seemingly nothing achieved, she becomes discouraged at the waste of a day.
I couldn’t help thinking beyond our waking hours, beyond the sixteen or so hours in our daily day, to the space between the two dates we all have. It’s the space where we are given the opportunity to learn, where we try and sometimes fail, but where we can get back up and try again. It’s the space where we are given the chance to contribute positively to the lives of those we love. It’s the space where we experience the good, the bad, and the ugly, where we make choices that will influence our daily day and all those that follow. It’s the space where change enters our lives and we move forward either with excitement and expectation or with fear and uncertainty. To be sure, this space is where we live, grow, and mature.
Now, I’m quite certain that nothing I’ve written thus far is new to you, nothing so profound that you’ll find yourself saying, “Wow, I never thought of that before!” So rather than meander down a path often travelled, I thought I would share something that speaks to what I’ve attempted to say.
In A Place at His Table Roy Lessin writes the following: (I have taken the liberty of personalizing it, understanding that “Today” is my daily day .)
Today is in God’s hands, and so am I.
His hands are strong and will uphold me;
His hands are great and will enfold me;
His hands are gentle and will embrace me;
His hands are protective and will cover me;
His hands are reassuring and will quiet me;
His hands are powerful and will defend me;
His hands are masterful and will conform me;
His hands are compassionate and will care for me
His hands are healing and will renew me;
His hands are calming and will comfort me;
His hands are giving and will bless me.
Personalizing it brought it closer to home: My daily days—even those days that come up empty— are in God’s hands and so am I!
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you.
I will uphold you with MY righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10
