God Keep Our Land

On July 1st my husband and I celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday at Muskoka Bible Centre on Mary Lake near Huntsville, Ontario. We decorated our friends’ golf cart and participated in a long parade with dozens of other enthusiasts. ‘Red and white’ was the colour of the day, unless, of course, you were a Toronto Maple Leaf fan and ‘blue’ dominated. (It made me think of the Sesame Street song: “One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t...

A Battle Won!

Most of us would agree that life is unpredictable: there is no way we can be certain of what lies ahead from one day to the next. Sometimes we win, as I’ve experienced recently with an award for my current novel. Sometimes the winding and troubled road of life seems to allow truth to fall on deaf ears, and it is beyond our control to help those who feel backed into a corner. The following is a story, penned for those struggling with such moments… when life appears as a winding and...

A Missing Piece… or Peace

Of late Doug and I have enjoyed putting together puzzles, mostly 1000-piece puzzles. Not sure how this came about other than politely accepting one to take on our winter holiday two years ago. We never bothered doing another one again until this past winter when we put three together while we were in Florida. And then we went out and bought three more to bring home! It seemed that the bug of puzzle-making had bit! But now that spring is here—and my summer respite to Muskoka Bible Centre...

When Truth is Not Enough

As I’ve journeyed through life, I’ve viewed telling the truth as pretty simple. It’s like a straight line leading from point A to point B: state the event and state the facts. There’s a quietness, an inner peace that comes when you know that what you’ve spoken is the truth. Besides, if you’ve stated the truth, you never need to worry about what you’ve said. Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” However, as to it being a...

Actions Speak Louder than Words

Actions Speak Louder than Words

Two words have been floating in an out of my mind over the past couple of days: integrity and graciousness, two words not commonly used in our daily language, but words that have powerful meaning. By definition integrity means being honest and morally upright; and by definition graciousness means being courteous, kind, and pleasant. Nothing brings these two words front and centre more than a twelve-hour day spent among thousands and thousands of people walking in the heat of the day at Animal...

And Then There was Light!

And Then There was Light!

Two stories. One lesson. The alarm was set for 3:10 a.m. Saturday morning and, thankfully, it was on Doug’s phone and not the bedside clock. He rolled over and slept for another ten minutes before getting up and doing what we all need to do when our feet hit the floor after a night’s sleep. Then it was my turn. “Can you leave on the light, please.” I called from our bedroom, wondering why he left the bathroom in darkness. “I can’t. The hydro’s out,” came the reply. Good grief!...
